CHP Battles Seat Belt Violators

Sonora, CA — Seat belt violators, who have managed to slide by the law, will not have it so easy anymore.

The Highway Patrol says it will be aggressively searching for anyone not wearing a seatbelt this summer. They say it is not about giving tickets, but about saving lives.

Reports indicate of the 2,671 vehicle occupant deaths last year, 37 percent were not wearing seat belts. CHP officials say teenagers are of special concern during the summer months.

They say teenagers have adopted the idea that seat belts do not need to be worn. In 2005, a total of 273,694 tickets were issued in the state for motorists choosing not to wear a seatbelt.
