Schwarznegger Tells Bush `No’ To More Guard Troops At Border

Sacramento, CA — Military officials say Governor Schwarzenegger has refused a Bush administration request to send an additional 1,500 National Guard troops to the border.

Earlier this week, the Bush administration asked California for the additional troops for the White House´s border-control effort.

The National Guard Bureau, an arm of the Pentagon, asked for the troops to fill in shortfalls in New Mexico and Arizona.

But the California National Guard confirmed Friday that the governor denied that request.

Schwarzenegger fears that sending more troops would stretch the California guard too thin in the event of an emergency or a disaster.

California already has 1,000 troops committed and a source says 250 of them are on the border already.
