California Landmark Bridge Dismantled

Walnut Creek, CA — Crews have begun disassembling the old Carquinez Bridge.

The span between Vallejo and Crockett that opened in 1927 was closed after officials decided it was too difficult to retrofit. Demolition is expected to be completed by September 2007.

The new Carquinez Bridge was built alongside it in 2003. Caltrans say workers have begun by removing the old bridge´s road decks and will later be lowering the large steel towers onto barges later this month. The steel will be sold or recycled under a $35 million demolition agreement with the contractor, California Engineering Contractors.

A “retirement ceremony” is scheduled for next week.
