Coroner’s Office Identifies Deceased Inmate

Sonora, CA — The Tuolumne County Coroner´s Office has released the identity of an inmate found dead in his cell at the county jail last Friday.

Authorities say 43-year-old Arnold Cowan was unresponsive and alone in his cell when a staff member came by to collect his dinner tray at about 5:00 in the afternoon.

Staff members immediately began CPR until medics arrived. Cowan was transported to Tuolumne General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy revealed that Cowan had suffered a major heart attack. He was awaiting trial on weapons charges after being arrested on an outstanding warrant in November.
