Wildcats Capture Second Consecutive Section Championship

Sonora, CA — Playing with the confidence of a winner, the Sonora High Wildcats proved themselves worth of championship calibre with their one sided 3-nil win over West Campus of Sacramento Monday afternoon to capture the Division Four Sectional Championship at Dunlavy Field.

Senior midfielder Abby Barton opened the scoring at the 34:53 mark of the first half with her 21st goal of the year. Considering another outstanding defensive effort, that would have been enough firepower. But the Lady ´Cats came right back with a pair of second half goals courtesy of sophomore Hilary Callahan at the 29:15 mark and then senior forward Courtney Opie closed out the scoring with her goal at the 8:58 mark.

The Wildcats wrap the year with a record of 26-1-1, an eight game winning streak and 23 shutouts. Some of the other numbers: the Wildcats averaged exactly five goals per game (140 for the season) and allowed only six goals (.22 per game).

That makes it back-to-back title years for the “green and gold.” Last year Buzz Garvin´s team captured the Division Three Sectional Championship. So now the eight seniors say goodby to the program: Abby Barton, Heather Perez, Alexa Janicki, Danielle Garvin, Shayla Collie, Courtney Opie, Leanne Wentworth and Catherine Krom.
