Sacramento, CA — The species of frog that inspired the “Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” has gained sanctuary.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has approved a proposal to create a 48 acre preserve for the red legged frog of the Sierra Nevada. The site is in Placer County and contains several ponds and woodlands, according to the Associated Press. The project is being spearheaded by the Placer Land Trust and Westervelt Ecological Services. The red legged frog, which Mark Twain made famous, was designated an endangered species by the U.S. in 1996.
