Calaveras, Alpine Rank Among Top Five In Pot Busts

California’s Department of Justice just released arrest data for 2008 indicates that Alpine and Calaveras Counties rank among California’s top five counties in terms of pot arrests per population.

Statewide, law enforcement officials arrested 78,514 people for pot offenses in 2008.

Alpine County led the state, with only 7 pot busts, but that equates to 58.3% of all of the arrests for the year. 

Calaveras had 173 arrests for pot, which ranks it number five in rate of arrests, at 37.6%.

Los Angeles had the state’s highest number of marijuana arrests – 23,851 – but that ranked only 25th among the state’s 58 counties when measured per population.

Tuolumne – with 80 pot busts – ranked 51st, in rate of arrests.

All told, authorities in California arrested 61,388 adults and juveniles on marijuana misdemeanors and another 17,126 for pot felonies.
