Perez To Lead Assembly

Sacramento, CA – The California Assembly has elected a new Speaker.

Los Angeles Democrat John Perez has been selected to replace outgoing Speaker Karen Bass, who will term out of office in November.

Perez was elected on a 48-26 party-line vote. He is the cousin of Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and becomes the first openly gay lawmaker to lead either house of the legislature. Perez was first elected to the Legislature in 2008.
