Court Denies Redistricting Lawsuits

Sacramento, CA — The California Supreme Court has shot down two Republican backed lawsuits challenging the state’s newly drawn state Senate and U.S. Congressional district maps.

The Associated Press reports that the lawsuits questioned the validity of the new maps that were recently adopted by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission. The Supreme Court also denied the opponents request for an emergency stay, which would have stopped the use of the maps in 2012.

The court voted 7-0, saying that the opponents failed to provide facts that the commission’s work was unreasonable. Among those that filed the lawsuit related to the Congressional maps was former District 19 Representative George Radanovich.

Republicans are expected to lose seats in the U.S. Congress and state Senate as a result of redistricting.
