Gaines Requests Ballot Measure

Sacramento, CA — The Secretary of State’s Office has received a request for a ballot measure to eliminate the new fire fee placed on rural residents.

The referendum request was filed this week by District One Senator Ted Gaines. Gaines and other proponents must collect signatures from 504,760 registered voters in order for the measure to be placed on the ballot during an upcoming election.

A challenge that proponents of the referendum could face is that the fee only applies to rural areas, and a majority of the voting public lives in large cities.
