Jobless Rate Up Last Month

Sacramento, CA– California’s unemployment rate last month increased to 11.8 percent.

That’s compared to 11.7 percent in May, according to the state Employment Development Department.

The latest numbers released Friday by the state EDD, also show locally that Tuolumne County’s rate increased to 13.8 percent in June, compared to 13.4 percent in May. Calaveras County’s rate was up to 15.4 percent, as opposed to 14.7 percent in May.

A survey of workers, which is used to calculate the jobless rate but is considered less reliable, showed 37,000 fewer people employed in California. That helped drive the unemployment rate to 11.8 percent, second only to Nevada.

The California rate fell below 12 percent in April for the first time since 2009.
