Hawkins First Year As Council Member

Matt Hawkins has completed his first year as a Sonora City Council Member.

Hawkins was Thursday’s KMVL “Newsmaker of the Day”.

According to Hawkins, the most difficult task of the last year was balancing the budget.

“We have an actual balanced budget for the first time in three years. That’s the good news. The down side was that as necessary budget cuts were being made, we were dealing with peoples jobs and lives, many of whom are very good employees” said Hawkins.

Hawkins says that he is pleased with the job performance of City Administrator Tim Miller as well as Sonora Mayor, Bill Canning.

Upon his arrival in July 2010, Hawkins was unhappy to discover that the City “did not have a full balanced budget.”

“We have to continue to make smart and honest decisions in 2011,” Hawkins said. “People elected me to stick to my principles and I’ll continue to do that”.

Hawkins concluded, “We will soon be working on updating the citywide Emergency Plan.”

The “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard each weekday on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
