Fewer DUIs More Crashes

Sonora, CA — There were plenty of motorists on the road over the Thanksgiving holiday and the CHP reports there were more crashes but fewer driving-under-the-influence.

In Tuolumne County Officer Ken Bruce reports that in the Tuolumne County area CHP made six arrests for driving-under-the-influence. There were two DUI related accidents and a total of nine crashes in the area. Last year Tuolumne area CHP made ten arrests for driving-under-the-influence but there were only three accidents.

In Calaveras County there were four arrested for suspected DUI. That was up from only one arrest last year. Last year there were five accidents and one fatality. This year there were no fatalities and two collisions involving only property damage.

San Andreas CHP Officer Jaime Castillo says hopefully public awareness is helping out. He says, “People are slowing down. We have tried to put out there that this is the most dangerous week, possibly of the year.” He added that he is hopefull that people are getting the message to slow down and allow extra time to get where they are going safely.

Statewide numbers are not yet available.
