Cleanup The Waterways

Sonora, CA — Quite a little trash gets dumped into area waterways over the summer months.

The Sierra Nevada Conservancy is hosting the 4th annual Great Sierra River Cleanup this weekend. Last year over 3,600 volunteers picked up trash along the Sierra Nevada that was left by Labor Day and summertime visitors. “There’s a huge list of strange things that we’ll find,” says Brittany Juergenson of the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, the state agency that oversees the event. “People find cars, a lot of tires, bowling balls and shopping carts.”

Juergenson says a local cleanup effort will be held in Sonora, led by the Tuolumne County Resource Conservation District. Contact Lindsey Rosasco at (209) 984-0500 for information. Additionally, there will be an event along the Clavey River hosted by the Tuolumne River Trust. Contact Paige Norberg for information, at (415) 882-7252.

On Saturday there will be a total of 95 cleanup events taking place throughout the state.
