Long Guns Bill Ban Sent To Governor

Sacramento, CA – The bill prohibits the public display of rifles and shotguns. Assembly Bill 1527 was approved by the Assembly 43-30 on Wednesday.

The bill would not bar guns in unincorporated areas, private businesses or property. Also, unloaded rifles would be allowed in vehicle gun racks. The measure is a response to gun rights advocates who took to openly carrying unloaded long guns to protest another bill that became law last year. That law prohibits the display of unloaded handguns.

The ban was sought by the State Police Chiefs Association. They say the public gun displays are causing confusion and alarm. The Association says officers and unarmed citizens cannot tell if the guns are loaded creating problems.

AB 1527 was proposed by Assemblymen Anthony Portantino of La Cañada Flintridge and Tom Ammiano of San Francisco.
