Youth Drowns In Yosemite

Yosemite, CA — A 10 year-old boy has tragically died in Yosemite National Park, and another child remains missing.

Yosemite Ranger Kari Cobb says a family from Southern California was hiking in the park yesterday afternoon and stopped for a break near the Vernal Fall footbridge. Family members got into the Merced River, and two young boys, one 10 and the other six, got swept away in the current. Approximately 150 yards downriver, the 10 year-old was pulled from the water by a park visitor, and he was unsuccessfully given CPR. The boy was later pronounced dead. The six-year-old remains missing, so search efforts continue today.

Portions of the Mist Trail will be closed throughout the day in order to accommodate the search and rescue operations. The names of the two boys have not been released.
