Update: California Prison Plan

Sacramento, CA — The Associated Press reports California’s plan to reduce prison crowding still falls 2,300 inmates short of complying with a federal court order. The AP says that increases the likelihood that the state will be forced to release more dangerous convicts before they complete their full sentences. The Governor met a midnight deadline yesterday and released a proposal to cut the state’s prison population by 9,300 more inmates by the end of the year.

Also, the AP says California Corrections Secretary Jeffrey Beard says he doesn’t like it, but the state will speed up the release of some inmates to cut crowding in state prisons. Beard calls the plan “ugly” but says it’s “the best plan we can come up with” to meet federal court rulings.
