Sequestration’s Impact On Education

Sonora, CA — The federal sequester is expected to result in less education funding beginning next school year.

“There will be no cuts due to sequestration this school year, but starting in July we anticipate cuts in Title One and special education funding,” says Joe Silva, Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools. “These are federal programs, and sequestration will have an impact. Schools will likely have to reduce programs and reduce staff. “

Title One benefits low income residents. Special education programs are mandated by the federal government. Both programs are expected to be cut by around five percent. Silva says the exact local impact is still unknown as it is tied to the Governor’s budget. School officials expect to learn more over the coming months.

The federal sequester took effect last month after Republicans and Democrats failed to reach a compromise on how to reduce the deficit.
