Calaveras Native Killed In Paragliding Accident

A former Calaveras County resident has died in a paragliding accident.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona reports that 28-year-old Zach Orman was attempting to land his glider Sunday afternoon in the Las Cienegas National Conservation area. He encountered what is referred to as a “dust devil” and was violently thrown to the ground. Orman was flown by air ambulance to an Arizona hospital where he later died from his injuries. Orman was a Bret Harte High School graduate.

Orman was a medical student and also served as an assistant instructor for a paragliding organization.
