Performing Arts Center Lacks Votes

San Andreas, CA — Plans to construct a $5.4 million performing arts center at Calaveras High School were shot down by the Calaveras Unified School District Board of Trustees.

Superintendent Mark Campbell says the board voted 3-2 to scrap the plans. The district has $4 million left from the 2006 Measure A bond package, and would have been eligible to receive $1.2 million in state matching funds for the construction. The sticking point was that the district would have been forced to borrow $200K to cover the remaining costs.

Campbell, who endorsed trying to borrow the remaining cash, says the district will now look at other potential projects that could benefit from the bond money. He notes that they could also look at building a smaller performing arts center.
