An Olympic Run In Downtown Sonora

Sonora, CA – Cheers will be heard in Sonora as the Special Olympic Torch makes its way through the downtown area.

The Torch Run will begin at 10 a.m. at the Red Church with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. The run heads southbound on Highway 49/Washington Street and then turns onto Stockton Street.  The final destination is the Mother Lode Fairgrounds where there will be a host of festivities.  Motorists in the area will want to slow down and use caution as there will be plenty of pedestrians in the area to watch out for along the route, according to the CHP.

The event will be the send off for area athletes to the Special Olympics Summer Games at UC Davis as well as the first Tuolumne County Special Olympic athletes going to the US Summer Games in Seattle.  Organizers say that this event is also a fundraiser and stress that all monies raised stays right here in the Mother Lode.

Joining in the fun will be members from the CHP Sonora Unit, Sonora Police Department, Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, and the Tuolumne-Calaveras County Unit of Cal Fire.
