Input Needed For Plan To Reduce Hazard Risk In Tuolumne County

Sonora, CA — A Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan is in the works and the publics’ opinions and suggestions are needed to complete the draft.

The Tuolumne County Office of Emergency Services wants to hear citizens’ strategies to combat potential natural (wildfires, flooding or major weather events) or man-made disasters at a public hearing. It is schedule for Monday (Nov. 27) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Board of Supervisors Chambers at 2 South Green Street in Sonora. During the two hour meeting, the public is encouraged to propose changes and additions to the preliminary draft with the final plan creating an outline of mitigation procedures for nearly 20 non-county agencies and special districts for local schools, fire protection, sanitation, lighting, the Me Wuk Indian Tribe and Tuolumne Utilities District.

The county is coordinating with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the California Office of Emergency Services to draw up the plan, which will recommend specific actions to protect people and community assets from disasters. It is designed to establish a broad local vision and guiding principles for reducing hazard risks while adding specific protections to eliminate or reduce identified vulnerabilities, according to county officials.
