CHP Releases New Details About Head-On Crash

Sonora, CA — New information has been released about a head-on crash that briefly closed Highway 49 near Shaws Flat Road.

CHP Officer Nick Norton reports that 23-year-old Jacob Vassar of Sonora was driving a 2001 Subaru southbound on Highway 49 and attempted to make a left turn onto Shaws Flat Road. For unknown reasons, he failed to see an oncoming northbound Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by 56-year-old Archie Barnett of Altaville. The two vehicles collided and Vassar was transported to Adventist Health Sonora to treat a leg injury and abrasions. Barnett decided to seek medical attention on his own, according to Officer Norton. The crash occurred at 12:50pm on Thursday. Some leaking fluids from the vehicles had to be cleaned up which caused a brief closure on Highway 49.
