Update: Sierra Nevada Winter Storm Warning Issued

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Sierra Nevada above 6,000 feet from 10 AM this morning through 4 AM Friday.

A Pacific storm will bring periods of winds and moderate to heavy snow above 6,000 feet along with strong gusty winds. Light snow begins this morning becoming heavy this afternoon through Thursday evening. Decreasing snow showers are expected Thursday night.

Snow levels will be above 8,000 feet through Thursday morning, lowering to 7,500 feet during Thursday afternoon and near 6,000 feet Thursday night.

Total snow accumulations will range from five inches to four feet above the 7,000 foot elevation.

Wind gusts of thirty to sixty-five mph are expected at the highest elevations.

Motorists planning travel into the mountains the Sierra Nevada during this time frame should be prepared for hazardous winter driving conditions. Heavy wet snow and strong winds are expected with near zero visibility at times. Travel will be extremely difficult with significant delays and chain controls possible. Damage to trees and power lines may occur.

A Winter Storm Warning for snow means there will be snow covered roads and limited visibilities. Travel is not recommended while the Warning is in effect. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
