Two Mother Lode Passes Open For Veterans Day Weekend Holiday

Sonora, CA — Mother Lode motorists planning higher elevation travel this weekend might consider the phrase “two out of three ain’t bad,” when it comes to mountain pass options.

With the latest bout of wet weather past and a weekend forecast of sunny skies and daytime highs in the low 60s, Caltrans officials say that crews were able to open Highway 108 Sonora Pass shortly before noon. Highway 120 Tioga Pass, which is under the auspices of Yosemite National Park rangers, did not need to close during the recent rains.

However, Highway 4 Ebbetts Pass remains closed at this point east of Lake Alpine. The reason is that there are still hazardous icy conditions in the shady areas along the highway.

Highway and safety officials remind motorists that since we are now in the winter weather season sudden weather changes are always possible, which is why chains should be carried along with emergency supplies.
