500-Plus Acre Prescribed Burn To Begin Next Week

Greeley Hill, CA — The Stanislaus National Forest plans to begin a 546 acre prescribed burn in the Groveland Ranger District next Monday.

The so-called China 04 Understory Burn will be ignited approximately four miles northeast of Greeley Hill. Approximately 50 acres will be burned daily, weather permitting. The burn is anticipated to last around 10 days. Smoke is anticipated to be visible from Smith Station Road, with down canyon drift smoke visible in the evening and early morning hours. The goal of the project is to reduce the buildup of flammable forest fuels, both ground and ladder fuels, and reduce the threat of damaging wildfires.

The Forest Service reports the burning will be monitored and conducted in accordance with state and county air quality guidelines.
