Murphys Resident Killed In Highway 4 Crash

Murphys, CA — The CHP reports that a Murphys man tragically died in a crash Saturday afternoon on Highway 4 in Calaveras County.

The information provided is an update to an earlier story. 69-year-old Peter D. Speno of Murphys was driving his 2006 Chevy HHR eastbound on Highway 4 near the intersection of Lower Utica Powerhouse Road at 12:25pm. For an unknown reason, his vehicle went off the side of the highway and down a dirt embankment. The vehicle overturned on Utica Powerhouse Road and continued in a southwesterly direction through a barbed wire fence and into the Murphys After Bay, becoming completely submerged in the water. Speno sustained fatal injuries in the crash. He was the only person inside the vehicle.

CHP Officer Rebecca Myers says what caused Speno to lose control of the vehicle remains unclear. Autopsy results are pending.
