Sonora Man Killed In Highway 108 Crash

Tuolumne County, CA — The CHP has identified the man that died Thursday afternoon in a vehicle accident on Highway 108.

37-year-old Evan Jacob Smith was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer near the intersection of Rushing Hill Lookout Road.  For unknown reasons the vehicle traveled off the roadway edge, overturned, and collided with a tree. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained. A passenger in the SUV, 22-year-old Briana Melanie Costa of Sonora suffered “moderate injuries” and was transported to Sonora Regional Medical Center.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident. What exactly led Smith to lose control of the vehicle remains under investigation. The crash occurred at 4:15pm.
