Six Gun Bills Signed, Several Vetoed

Sacramento, CA — California Governor Jerry Brown put his signature on six gun-control measures Friday, among them a requirement that people turn in high-capacity magazines and another requiring background checks for ammunition sales.

In signing the six bills, Brown attached a message stating, “My goal in signing these bills is to enhance public safety by tightening our existing laws in a responsible and focused manner, while protecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners.”

The Governor also vetoed five other gun bills, which included a requirement to register homemade firearms and to report lost or stolen weapons to authorities. Brown’s reasoning for not signing some of those measures was due to duplicate provisions already existing in a ballot measure by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, which will be left to the voters to decide in the November election. In a message Brown explained that while he appreciated the intent to strive for enhanced public safety, he felt the objective would be obtained by having the measure “put to voters only once.”
