Angels Camp Man Hurt In Crash That Closed Highway 4

Calaveras County, CA — The CHP has released the details of a crash that closed Highway 4 for around an hour yesterday afternoon near Vallecito Bypass Road.

The CHP reports that 69-year-old Garrett Melton of Murphys was driving a 1997 Chrysler Sebring eastbound on Highway 4 and he drifted over the solid double yellow line. He struck an oncoming Dodge pickup truck driven by 73-year-old Don Stemler of Angels Camp. Melton’s vehicle traveled to the left (north) and hit a concrete wall, while Stemler’s truck overturned, facing east. Stemler was flown by helicopter to Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto to treat “moderate injuries.”

The crash was reported at 4:35pm, and the highway was closed for about an hour for the cleanup and investigation.
