Fan Safety For The Big Game Day

Sonora, CA – The CHP wants to remind motorists to be a good team player on Super Bowl Sunday and designate a sober driver, take a cab or walk home on game day.

Officer Nick Norton notes that not only are DUI’s a problem. “In years past there’s always been an issue with domestic violence as well. Whether it’s the drinking or the whole atmosphere of what’s going on for some reason the Super Bowl tends to be one of the higher domestic violence days throughout the year.”

Norton adds that drinking and driving remains the biggest problem. Angels Camp police reports these statistics for California from 2014, the most recent data available, that 882 people were killed in DUI related crashes. “Drunk driving is completely preventable,” said Angels Camp Police Chief Todd Fordahl. “All it takes is a little planning. We want fans to remember that it’s a choice. Drink or drive—but never do both.”  Additionally, statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. Fordahl advises leave your keys at home if you plan on drinking.

Norton cautions motorists if you see a suspicious driver on the roadways pull over and call the CHP. He warns never chase the vehicle instead it is best to get the driver’s license number.
