Need To Get Rid Of An Old Mattress?

Calaveras County, CA — A new recycle program in Calaveras County allows free mattress disposal in an effort to prevent roadway dumping and wasting space in area landfills.

The County’s Public Works Department has teamed up with the Mattress Recycling Council to enhance its landfill diversion goals by recycle mattresses and box springs at the Rock Creek Solid Waste Facility, located at 12021 Hunt Road in Milton.  County Integrated Waste Management Program Coordinator, Yvonne Van Zee says, “This is brand new.  The County requires that these materials not go to any of the county’s transfer stations.  One, not only do the mattresses and box springs jam up the hoppers, but they become all twisted, crushed and soiled rendering them unsuitable to be recycled.”

Van Zee says that this is an ongoing program and does not take out of the county’s coffers.  Instead, the funding comes from the California Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act, which charges the public an $11 recycling fee when purchasing bedding.

For more information on the recycling program, contact Van Zee at (209) 785-1689 or yvanzee@co.calaveras.ca.us.
