‘Death Ride’ To Close Mountain Passes

Markleeville, CA – The CHP has put up signs notifying travelers of a bike race that will impact three mountain passes this weekend.

The “Death Ride” bike tour will shut down Highway 4 Ebbetts Pass from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, along with Highway 89 Monitor Pass, and share access with cars and cyclists on Highway 88 Carson Pass throughout the day.

The ride is near the Washington Fire, which broke out three miles south of Markleeville on June 21 and is now 99% contained. CHP spokesperson Officer Toby Butzler says, “I don’t believe the fire will have any effect on the bicycle tour. There are no road closures as a result of this fire anymore.” He expects some 2,500 fans to line the roadways on Saturday.

The CHP offers an alternative route to Ebbetts Pass by taking Highway 49 to 88, and then to 89. For road information anytime, you can click on the “Traffic” tab on myMotherLode.com’s home page.
