Update: Two Fires Burning In Forest Contained

Update 5 p.m.: Forest Service Spokesperson Georgia Dempsey says, “Both fires have been contained. The Gooseberry Fire at 1/10 of an acre and the Two Mile at nearly 3 acres.”

Update 2:30 p.m.: Two fires are now burning in the Stanislaus National Forest — one sparked by an escaped debris burn, the other by lightening.  Forest officials report a second blaze has been spotted near Dodge Ridge Road in the Summit District.  It has been named the “Gooseberry Fire”.  Service Spokesperson Georgia Dempsey says,  “The fire was started by lightening striking a tree.  It is 1/10 of an acre and moving at a slow rate of spread.”

Dempsey updated the earlier fire that is now being called the “Two Mile Fire” in the Mi Wuk area, near Funks Meadow. She says it has been determined to have been ignited by an escaped debris burn pile. It is two to three acres and also moving at a slow rate of spread. Resources on the scene include two engines, one water tender and a 20 person hand crew.

Original Story 11:25 A.M.: Mi Wuk Village, CA — There is a fire burning in the Stanislaus National Forest.

Forest Service Spokesperson Georgia Dempsey says, “We have a small fire burning in the Mi Wuk area, near Funks Meadow. It’s currently about 3-4 acres in size.”

A CAL Fire helicopter is dropping water on the fire, and some other ground resources are responding.  No homes or structures are considered in immediate danger. The fire is moving at a slow rate of spread. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
