Two Suffer Major Injuries In Calaveras Crash

Calaveras County, CA — The CHP has released new details about a crash that closed a section of Highway 49 in Calaveras County for approximately 1 1/2 hours.

The crash was first reported at 5pm Wednesday, at the intersection of North Poverty Gulch Road. The CHP reports that 26-year-old Travis Dew of El Dorado Hills was driving a 2000 Chevy northbound, and due to his tired and sleepy state, allowed his vehicle to drift into the opposing traffic lane while trying to negotiate a curve. He collided with a southbound 2009 Dodge driven by 45-year-old Kelly Thomas of Valley Springs. Her vehicle was propelled into a guard rail on the west edge of Highway 49.

Both Dew and Thomas suffered major injuries and were taken away by ambulances to hospitals in Modesto.

The area were the crash occurred is often referred to by locals as “13 curves” and is just north of Mokelumne Hill.
