Escape Debris Fire

Copperopolis, CA – Firefighters are battling an escaped debris burn in Calaveras County.

Crews report the flames spread to nearby grass on the 1200 block of Acorn Street by Cheyenne Road near Copperopolis in the Sawmill Creek area.  Cal Fire reports the fire is 1/4 acre in size.  There is no word on the fires rate of spread or whether it is threatening any structures at this time.  We will bring you more information as soon as it comes into the News Center.

Update 3:25 p.m.:  Firefighters have contained the fire at 1/2 acre.  Cal Fire Dispatch says the flames from the debris burn spread to nearby grass and fanned out into the canyon area between Acorn Street and Cheyenne Road in the Sawmill Creek area with houses on either side.  Luckily, two engines and a hand crew were able to extinguish the flames in about 20 minutes with no structures damaged.
