This Saturday October 11 is Second Saturday Art Walk’s 5th Anniversary in downtown Sonora. The evening will include the screening of the documentary movie “Sign Painters”.

Judy Grossman, local sign painter, designer, graphic artist and muralist was Wednesday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

The movie “Sign Painters” provides both a current and historical view of the “signs of our lives” and how they have influenced our culture. The documentary is said to be a historical statement of our lives and times.

The film is based on the book “Sign Painters” by, Faith Levine and Sam Macon and some of the nationally know sign/mural painters represented in the book and the film will be in Sonora this weekend at the Sonora Opera Hall giving demonstrations.

According to Grossman, “Sign Painters” celebrates the hand-painted sign industry, an American tradition. The documentary explores an insight into a a highly specialized underground trade, emphasizing an appreciation for a balance between art and commerce.

There will be an auction of several of the larger items at the Sonora Opera Hall on Saturday at 6 PM. Many of the smaller crafts will be available for sale on Sunday.
