Unemployment Rate Drops In Mother Lode

Sonora, CA — The number of people seeking jobs in Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties declined last month.

The May unemployment rate in Tuolumne County was 7.6%, compared to 8.4% in April. Calaveras County’s rate fell to 8.1%, compared to 8.6% the month prior.

California’s statewide unemployment rate last month was 7.6%, right on par with Tuolumne County. The state’s Employment Development Department reports that sectors that added jobs include construction, education, health, and tourism. Areas that saw declines include mining, manufacturing and trade.

The U.S. unemployment rate was 6.3% in May.
