Controversial Birthing Center Approved

Soulsbyville, CA — A scaled down version of a proposed birthing center will be allowed in Soulsbyville.

The applicant, Ellen Jasmer, scaled back the project at a residence on the 16500 block of Draper Mine Road from six birthing rooms to three.  Confusion on the revised plan had the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors call for a clarification on the project in writing from staff at its last meeting.

Some neighbors had previously objected to the project due to increased traffic, concerns over fire and medical safety and lack of parking for the facility.  Today, the board voted in favor of a special use permit.

Board Chair Evan Royce says, “I’m glad that it’s been scaled down, even though I know everybody’s not going to be happy with it. It is somewhat of a compromise. If it was in my neighborhood, I would be okay with it. I know that there’s people that have concerns, but I think once it moves forward, I think it will be okay.”

The Planning Commission approved the project back in February, but an appeal was made to the Board of Supervisors. Today’s vote was unanimous.
