Safeway Purchased By Albertson’s Owner

Sonora, CA — California based Safeway has been purchased by the investment group Cerberus Capital Management.

CCM owns several supermarket chains, most notably Albertsons. A press release announcing the sale says, “The merger will create a diversified network that includes over 2,400 stores, 27 distribution facilities and 20 manufacturing plants with over 250,000 dedicated and loyal employees. No store closures are expected as a result of this transaction.”


Safeway, based in Pleasanton, has stores under the names of Safeway, Carrs, Pavilion’s, Randall’s, Tom Thumb and Vonns. Cerberus Capital Management owns stores under the names of Albertsons, Lucky, Acme, Shaw’s and others.


The company’s acquisition of Safeway is estimated to cost around $9 billion. Safeway has a store in Sonora, and the other closest locations are in Jackson and Modesto.
