Construction Prompts Graduation Change

Sonora, CA — Sonora High School’s graduation ceremony has been relocated to Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys. The reason for the move is that the school’s stadium will be under construction.

Sonora High School Superintendent Mike McCoy says, “This is just a one-time event. We did look at a lot of other options, but this was the best.”

Some of the other options were the Mother Lode Fairgrounds and Bret Harte High School, but McCoy says those venues did not fit the event’s needs. He stressed the ceremony will be held in the Ironstone Vineyards Amphitheater and there will be no alcohol at the event.

“I actually drove out there when this was first proposed. I looked at it and it just made lots of sense. There’s parking, lighting and restrooms. It was very cost affordable. It was the only facility that I could find in a two-three county area that could hold 3,000 people and seating with wheelchair access,” said McCoy.

The event will cost just over $1400. Sonora’s Graduation will be held June 5th.
