A new poll has found Californians have a negative view of Congress and plan to vote differently in the next election.
A statewide Field Poll showed just 11% of voters approved of the job the U.S. Congress is doing overall, while 84% disapproved. That is close to the record low set in September of 2011 when just 9% of Californians rated Congress positively.
When it comes to overall job performance, Californians see both Democrats and Republicans in a negative light. One in five voters or 20% approved of the job being done by Republicans while 72% disapproved. Democrats fared better, with a 34% approval versus a 55% disapproval rating.
The poll also found fewer voters in GOP districts will cast ballots to re-elect incumbents in next year’s election than Democratic voters. In Republican districts, 43% of voters say they will not support incumbents as opposed to 36% that will. There is slightly more support for Democratic incumbents with 47% of voters saying they will support incumbents versus 36% who will not.
The state’s two U.S. Senators, Democrats Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer both have higher approval than disapproval job ratings. Feinstein’s numbers are 43% favorable and 36% unfavorable. However, that is the poorest rating for Feinstein in her twenty years in office. 44% approved of the job Boxer is doing compared to 37% that disapproved.
