Mono Way Widening Expensive

Sonora, CA — Some tough decisions will have to be made about how to proceed with the Mono Way widening project.

The deadline to submit construction bids has passed, and lowest bid came from San Andreas based KW Emerson, Inc. at $3.39 million. Unfortunately, it is $635K over the engineers estimate. Modesto based George Reed Inc. submitted a bid of $4.05 million and Sonora based Sierra Mountain Construction Inc. came in at $4.63 million.

Funding for the Mono Way widening will come from the City of Sonora and County of Tuolumne, and money is allocated from traffic impact mitigation fees collected from developers. Sonora City Administrator Tim Miller says the options to make up the $635K include coming up with more money than anticipated for the project, or deny the bids, and open up the bidding again. Miller says a project team will soon meet and make a recommendation to the City and County.

Regardless of which direction is taken, construction is anticipated to begin early next year. Mono Way will be expanded to five lanes, from Greenley Road to Fir Drive.
