Flu Season Quickly Approaches

Local health officials say it is time to start making plans to get a flu shot.

“October and November are the best time to get the vaccine because it takes about two weeks for it to prevent the illness,” says Dean Kelaita, Calaveras County Health Officer. “Some flu seasons start earlier than others, but usually it’s at its peak in January and February, so getting the vaccine earlier in the season is the best time.”

Kelaita says the groups at highest risk include adults over 50, pregnant women, young children, and anyone with chronic health conditions. Flu shots are available through local healthcare providers and public health departments.

The Calaveras County Public Health Department will put on upcoming flu shot clinics on October 17 at the St. Patrick’s Church in Angels Camp from 10am -11:30am, October 22 at the Good Samaritan Community Church in Valley Springs from 2-4:30pm, and October 24 at the Independence Hall in Arnold from 10am-noon. The vaccine is also currently available at the Calaveras County Public Health Office in San Andreas each Monday from 3-5:30pm and Thursday’s from 8am-noon.

In Tuolumne County the vaccine will be available at the annual Health Fair at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds on October 15-16. After the Health Fair, the Tuolumne County Public Health Department will have the vaccine available at its office each Tuesday afternoon beginning at 1:30pm.
