A Murphys man arrested on elder-abuse charges apparently committed suicide in the Calaveras County
Jail. The body of James Voellmeke was discovered a little more than seven hours after he was arrested. He was accused of dragging his 87-year-old mother
with his car. She had been trying to prevent him from driving drunk by reaching inside his vehicle to remove his keys. He´d been arrested three times in the past
three days on alcohol-related charges.
