Sac County Jail Continues Strip Search

The Sacramento County Sheriff´s Department says it will continue a policy of routinely strip searching jail

inmates. The practice is criticized by a county judge as unconstitutional. The department says it will keep doing them until a final ruling from Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Thomas Cecil. His tentative ruling says the searches are unnecessary and violate privacy rights.

The sheriff´s department maintains strip searches are necessary for security of jail staff and prisoners. But attorneys who filed a class action suit on behalf of inmates say it´s unusual – and that Sacramento County is out of step.
