Court Upholds Gun Ban

A San Francisco federal appeals court is upholding California´s ban on assault weapons. The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled today individuals had no right to bear arms under the Second Amendment, thus giving states a free hand to regulate them.

Weapons owners challenged amendments to a decade-old California law that originally outlawed seventy five high-powered weapons with rapid-fire capabilities. Three years ago, the California Legislature redrafted the law to ban copycat weapons with similar features to the banned weapons.

In putting down a lawsuit challenging the revised law, the court said the right to bear arms means the right carry weapons in conjunction with service in a state militia.

The National Rifle Association said it was disappointed with the ruling.
