First Woman Majority Leader In State Assembly

State Assemblywoman Wilma Chan of Oakland has been appointed as the first woman and the first Asian-American majority leader of the California Assembly. Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson selected Chan to replace San Francisco Democrat Kevin Shelley, who is running for secretary of state.

The fifty-three year old Chan was elected to the Assembly in November of 2000. Before her election to the Assembly, Chan served on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.
