Train Derailment Shuts Down Amtrak Service To Valley

A freight train derailed north of Corcoran this afternoon, losing 28 cars and halting passenger rail traffic in the Central Valley.

The 88-car train derailed on Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks near State Route 43, forcing officials to close the road for about two hours.

No was injured in the crash and cars that had been carrying hazardous materials were empty. The derailment put an indefinite hold on Amtrak service between Bakersfield and points north.

A railroad spokeswoman says crews will work through the night to clean up the mess.
