Lawsuit Stops Logging

A federal judge has halted a project to log trees killed by fire and to remove brush from the Six Rivers National Forest pending more environmental review.

The forest´s supervisor says the U.S. Forest Service could decide to do the review or scrap the project entirely.

The project is supposed to remove dead and dying timber from more than 800 acres of forest land burned by the Megram Fire in 1999. The forest service says it´s clearing the areas to make firefighting easier in the future.

But environmentalists have sued, saying the project is a timber sale and not a forest management technique.
